The manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Andre Villas Boas, has said that the Belgian defender, Jan Vertonghen, has got the capability to fill in the shoes of Ledley King who had announced his retirement from football in July this year. Vertonghen is the new signing of the club. Boas was delighted with Vertonghen’s performance in the match against West Bromwich Albion which ended in a draw.

Boas said that Vertonghen has got the capability to be a great player. He played superbly against West Brom. The retirement of King was a huge blow for the club, but, the team has got a promising youngster in the form of Vertonghen who could become a superstar in the future.

In the match against West Brom, Tottenham was ahead till the last minute, but, James Morrison managed to score the equaliser for his team in the 90th minute. The Tottenham defenders were able to clear the header of Romelu Lukaku, but, the West Brom players showed brilliant skills and brought the ball into the penalty box again.

Morrison got a terrific cross and he flicked the ball into the goal post. The goalkeeper of Tottenham, Brad Friedel, had no chance of making a save. Tottenham could have taken the lead again in the injury time when Vertonghen put the ball into the goal post by capitalizing on the pass of William Gallas, but, that goal was disqualified as Gallas was in an offside position while passing the ball.

Both the teams played hard competitive football in the first half. There was no goal scored in the first half. Tottenham managed to take a lead in the 74th minute when Assou-Ekotto’s deflection went into the far corner of the goal post. The West Brom players didn’t give up and continued fighting hard and ended up scoring the leveller in the last minute. Tottenham will play its next match against Norwich City.
