STRONG DEFENCE MATTERS

Ledley King has said that a team must have a strong defence if it has to be considered as great.

King who himself was a defender during his playing days was talking to a website yesterday on various football topics.

When he was asked about modern football, he said, “These days, the emphasis is more on attacking brand of football. There are so many fantastic strikers around at the moment that the guys who play at deep positions don’t get that much recognition, but, I am a big believer of the fact that if a team doesn’t have a strong defence, it can’t become great.”

“You look at Bayern Munich’s performance in the recent past. They have won almost everything and the simple reason behind them having that much success is that they are defensively quite solid.”

When asked after his retirement how difficult it was for him to get used to not being on the ground playing, King said, “I think I would have found it a bit more difficult if I had not continued being involved in club activities. So, I want to thank Tottenham board for appointing me the ambassador. However, it’s not that I don’t miss the ground action at all. I surely do, but, the retirement is something that comes in every sportsperson’s life.”

King decided to quit professional football at the end of the 2011-12 Season. He is one of those players who played all his football for only one club. He came through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur and stayed there throughout his career. He made a total of 268 league appearances for the Spurs and found the back of the net 10 times.

He still is a part of Tottenham Hotspur, not as a player, but, as an ambassador.
