Jan Vertonghen a Spurs Legend

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the clubs beloved across England with their dedication as a well-run club that have taken the right step to success. Unlike Manchester City and Chelsea who have benefited from rich owners in the past decade. Spurs have been able to build their team on the back of old school coaching and a mix of transfer bargains.

One player that has come to epitomize this transformation is Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen. The 31-year-old is one of the stalwarts of the team and has been one of their best signings in the past decade. Signed from Ajax for £12 million, he has gone on to become one of the best defenders in Europe.

Capable of playing as a centre back or as a left –back Vertonghen has the qualities of a modern defender playing in the Premier League. He is physically imposing, comfortable on the ball and equally very good in the air. The defender has been the rock on which Pochettino has built this team in the past four seasons.

He has always been a special player from his time at Ajax Amsterdam winning two league titles in his time in Holland. He was also named the Dutch Footballer of The Year in his last season with the club which is no mean feat for a defender.

When Pochettino arrived in 2014 it looked like Vertonghen’s time at the club was over but he worked hard and earned a spot back in the first team. Since then he has not looked back churning out consistent performances in the past 4 seasons.

His performances in the two legs against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this season has been nothing short of brilliant. He is on his way to joining club legends like Ledley King as one of the best centre-backs in the history of the club.

The only thing missing in his time at the club is a silverware and if he continues with his performances Spurs might just have a chance in the Champions League this season.
